It is with great sadness that we report that Blanco, the beloved dog of Sagrada Familia was struck and killed instantly by a truck on Maundy Thursday in the morning just a half block from San Lucas Church.

Martha saw it happen from the roof of the Casa Hogar.

Shown here with Katiuska, he was much loved by all the teens.

Blanco especially warmed up to Tio Alejandro.

They were good buddies.

BACK TO SCHOOL DAYS

The children from Casa Hogar San Jose are

delighted to meet Fr. Chris and Anne Lewis-Jenkins,

who have traveled to meet them all the way from Wales!

Their church runs a thrift shop that has helped financially

support this children's home for the past six years.

What a blessed time was had by all in getting to know one another!

The Lewis-Jenkins bring each of the children a stuffed animal or doll.

A team of twenty-two folks with big hearts

arrived from Christ Church in Plano,Texas

to spend the week of February 21st - 26th

with the children from the two Casas Hogares.

Current SAMS missionaries,Sandy and Gloria

Johnson, are thrilled to reunite with former

SAMS missonary, Vicki Robertson.

The man of the hour is Ricardo Vergara,

who is overseeing the construction project

for the new dormitory for the teens.

Members of the team were delighted to view the progress.

The team split into three groups: one to each of

the children's homes, and one to the construction
site. Here, Tia Millie teaches the younger
children at San Jose how to make a banner.

Rosa Maria and Tamara were very focused on their projects!

The finished products were beautiful!
What an artistic bunch!

Other activities included making hand painted

crosses for their sponsors back in the U.S.

And a reminder of God's unfailing love

in the promise of the rainbow.

Plus, it was fun just to have time to play with the Tios and Tias!

A special little boy who brightened our
days was Anthony, the son of one of the
workers at San Jose. As Tia Cinde said,
"Anthony taught me a lot about Jesus today.
Although he cannot speak words, he speaks volumes
about love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness,
and self-control. His joy was contagious...
his life - a gift to this world."

Following lunch, the children gave a wonderful
program of dances and song for their beloved
Tios and Tias. Here Estrella and Diego Armando

Construction marches on --- January 10

When a Global Alpha Training team from Christ Church, Denver visited Arequipa, they toured the construction site at Casa Hogar Sagrada Familia. The concrete roof was poured just before Christmas and at this point, they were preparing to stucco the walls inside.

Much sand and gravel is needed for the floors yet to be poured.

The casa will feature beautiful arches.

God has given them by living in the Casas Hogares...

mission above Arequipa, in a very poor area.

The treat of the evening....an entire roasted pig!

sparkler, and we all gathered around the nacimiento,
where the baby Jesus has now appeared.

and we had a special time of prayer,
thanking the Lord for sending His Son,
Jesus Christ, into the world for us.

Christ Church Plano! The new additions
this year were amazed and overwhelmed!

Roofing Day

Dec 21 was a momentous day as the concrete

was poured for the roof of the entire first floor.

at the new construction site for Sagrada Familia.

WOW! What a lot of progress.

In this area are the new dorms.

This part connects the new dorms to the dining area.

The concrete needs about 2 weeks to cure and then

the poles can be removed so further work can be done inside.

After Christmas, they could start on the staircases.

Baptism and First Communions

Construction Update Dec 16, 2010

Construction is going VERY WELL -- just ahead of schedule.

As of Dec 16, they are preparing for a big day

of "techando" or pouring the concrete for the roof of the 1st floor.

Wooden poles go in to support the roof as it's poured soon.

On Friday, October 29, the Christ Church team
from Plano, Texas finished their part of the work.

There were more rocks needed before they could pour concrete
for the remaining 10 columns. The bucket brigade works best.

On Saturday morning, October 30, the team took the time
to tour the historic Santa Catalina Convent
in downtown Arequipa,

with its characteristic blue and red coloring.

This is the laundry area from the 1600s.

We really appreciate the generous spirit and hard work
of all these men. Their work has certainly gotten this
project off to a great start.
Hopefully the kids will move in February.

The Team visits Sagrada Familia for Susana's 18th birthday

On Thursday afternoon, October 28,

the team visited the temporary digs for the Sagrada Familia teens.
They now live on the second floor of San Lucas Mission
until the new place is ready in February.

It was an extra special day as it was Susana's birthday.

She is the first female in the casas to turn 18.

Martha, the tutora, holds the cake while

Susana extinguishes her candle.

The team bought her a carrot cake from Capriccios.

Those who have visited Arequipa before

know that spells YUMMY.

Several of the girls put on special dances for the Texas team.

Construction Day 4 - mixing concrete

Having erected all 20 columns on Wednesday,

the team got down to the serious business of mixing concrete

and hauling it to each column.

Each team member was asked to put his name

on a column. Later a small plaque will be placed

with their name beside each column.

Some of the first concrete gets poured into a hole.

Large rocks are placed into the hole

before concrete is added.

Some rocks were TOO big to lift easily.

So, the guys busted them into smaller pieces.

Johnny, the animal, gets a workout loading 5 gallon buckets

of sand & gravel mix into the concrete mixer.

Several guys helped him by loading the buckets.

to a distant hole.

The team donated just over $3000 for supplies.

This went for rebar and for cement mix.

Construction Day 3 -- raising the columns

On Wednesday October 27, the Christ Church team's task
was to locate the 20 columns of re-bar into the holes in the ground.

Here the columns are being stacked on the ground

until they are ready to raise them.

Construction Team Day 2

They thought they had finished the big water storage tank at the site, But Freddy said they can get a full tanker truck of water for the same price as a partial delivery. So the guys made a BIGGER pool.

Back at it on Tuesday morning

making the hole deeper and wider.

All the dirt that comes out has to go somewhere.

Finally the hole is finished.

Then they replace the lining.

Then the tanker truck came

and filled up the new pool.

It's probably about 4000 gallons.

The team was asked to move some heavy rocks

to be part of the foundation mix with cement.

Here they use the "bucket brigade" method.

Monday, October 25th, the members of the construction team

from Christ Church, Plano, TX, visited the younger children's

home, Casa Hogar San Jose. It was a blessing for everyone!

Such a beautiful drive out there....

Midday on October 24 a team of 9 men from Christ Church, Plano, Texas arrived, by the skin of their teeth, to help start on the new dormitory for Casa Hogar Sagrada Familia. Their lugagge all arrived finally by 2:30 on October 25.

Their task for Monday was to dig a big hole to be lined in plastic

to be a reservoir for water for mixing concrete on Tuesday.

The hole ended up being a meter deep.

Some used pick and shovel to loosen dirt

and then fill wheelbarrows.

To take to a large dump to be hauled away.

While the team all ate lunch, a truckload of large rock

came for the base of the columns to be raised Tuesday.

After the hole was dug, it was lined with plastic

then covered with sheets of roofing

in order to minimize condensation of the water.

The team posed for a shot after their

"mission accomplished" for the day.

The kids are adjusting to their new life living on the 2nd floor of San Lucas Mission for the next several months while their new home is being built.

the teens move to another location, the upstairs of San Lucas Church,

which is adapted for new bedrooms, separate for girls and boys.

October 13 was a BIG day at Casa Hogar Sagrada Familia. The long-awaited construction finally begins a year after breaking ground. The teens moved their living quarters to San Lucas Church and today was moving day. With all the dust generated and the hazards of construction equipment it was decided that it was too hazardous to keep the kids on site.

The first step was to tear down the old storage shed

and move the sillar blocks to make a storage area for building supplies.

Kids then packed up their mattresses and beds

and loaded them onto the van for the move.

Here, Susana is in the middle of mattresses and bags of clothes.

The kitchen has to go too.
So Susana carries a hefty bag of foodstuffs.

SOLIDARITY WITH THE ROOF DOGS

On Saturday, September 11, 2010, the Roof Dogs

held their run in Plano, Texas, to raise funding to

help continue supporting the Casas Hogares.

Here in Arequipa, the children from the two homes

got together for a day of fun and games in

solidarity with their beloved "Perros Techeros."

During the independence days of Peru,

school is off for the entire week....so Tio

Alejandro, and Tias Gloria and Kym decided

to treat the kids to a movie and an ice cream
on Friday, July 30th.

We went to Shrek 3 and the kids had a blast!

It was interesting for the "Tios Gringos" to

try to follow the story line completely in Spanish!

Thankfully, Shrek movies speak for themselves :)

New girl at San Jose

On Thursday evening, July 22, after an emotional afternoon farewell for the three kids being adopted, a new resident appeared at Casa Hogar San Jose. Her name is Martita and little is known about her situation other than she was abandoned in Mollendo, a coastal city, is about 6 years old, and speaks only Quechua. She is a sweet little girl. Fortunately the director, Maria Perez, and the cook speak Quechua, but no one else in the home does.

QUINCEAÑERA NIGHT!

Saturday, July 24th, 2010 was a special night for Martha and Victoria, their quinceañera!

This is a type of "coming of age" fiesta, signifying that the girls are

no longer "chicas," but "señoritas." This marks a turning point where

they will take on more responsibility, making more adult decisions.

Martha's were Sandy and Gloria Johnson,

long-term SAMS missionaries in Arequipa,

and Victoria's was Kym McDaniel,

short-term SAMS intern here for two months,

but previously on many Roof Dog visits to the casas.

First there was a church ceremony where the girls prayed the
following prayer: "Thank You, Lord, for permitting me to complete
fifteen years of age. Accept my youth that I offer with all of my
heart. I promise to serve You all the days of my life.
Help me to complete Your will here on the earth, and one day,
in the company of my loved ones, to be able to enjoy the
eternal pleasures that You have prepared for us. Amen"

THURSDAY, JULY 22nd WAS XAVIER, ANGELA, AND LIZET'S

LAST DAY LIVING AT THE CASA HOGAR SAN JOSE

In true Peruvian custom, the children at the younger
home gave them a "despedida,"or official farewell.
It was a time of great emotion, for the Director, Maria Perez,

the children being adopted, the adoptive parents,
and the rest of the youngsters, as well as those who came as guests.
The casas here are truly like family, and this was very

obvious as many gave a tearful good-bye to their beloved friends.

Nelsons arrive for adoption

Monday, July 19 was a joyous day as

Emily and David Nelson

arrived to adopt Lizet, Angela, and Xavier.

As you can see everyone is very happy

about becoming a new family.

The kids of Casa Hogar San Jose

welcomed the Nelsons with some singing.

Then each of the kids read their new parents

a letter expressing their joy.

Xavier promises to be a good son.

Lizet says she was been waiting to be part of this family.

Then Angela expresses her joy of joining the family.

It was an emotional time for all, but very joyful.

Awhile later, Xavier plays his zampona

and Angela and Gloria play a duet.

Emily is glad the kids have had a good introduction to piano.

The new family looks very happy.

David and Emily were accompanied by Maria Elena and Raul

who have 25 years of experience in facilitating adoptions.

A local psychologist and social worker are also

working with them to finalize all the paperwork.

They'll be in Arequipa into early August and

after a few days in Lima will be heading back to Texas and Oklahoma.

Starting July 22, the kids will be living with their new parents

at the former home of Fr. Ron and Vicki Robertson.

After meeting the kids on Monday evening, all the adults went

out for a special celebration dinner at La Italiana.

Victoria and Martha have recently turned 15

at Casa Hogar Sagrada Familia.

Tias Kym and Gloria are sponsoring a big party for them on July 24.

This is a special event when a girl
is no longer a "chica" but becomes a "señorita".

There is a LOT to do in getting ready: renting dresses,

making party favors, handing out invitations,
planning the party with food and music.

This weekend the girls will be coming over
to the Johnsons for a bead-making project
to hand out to all their friends.

It's not often that a young woman gets treated like a princess.

Last week, we accompanied them to try on dresses. WOW!

You can tell Martha is excited. No wonder!

Gloria gets back into piano teaching with the younger kids

Upon returning from the United States, Gloria attended 4 weeks

of a refresher in Spanish, but managed to teach some piano lessons

including some of the new students.

Tia Kym McDaniel has been working at the casas teaching English

to the kids especially focusing on the three siblings

soon to be adopted by a family from Oklahoma.

On Saturday afternoon, Kym, Gloria, and Sandy

have gone to make learning fun with some games.

They are very enthusiastic practicing action verbs in English.

Here a team is assigned to act out the word "wash".

Lizet gets excited when she correctly names the verb.

On another Saturday, Tia Kym led some games with all the kids on the patio.

Pamela tries to throw a ball between the legs

of the other kids as they try to block her shot.

After a busy time of play, it's good to wind down with some quieter activities

like reading. Lizet and Tamara enjoy this special time with Kym.

Angela in 5th grade takes the time to read to

our darling new 1st grader Gimena.

Adoption is getting closer

Former Dallas "Roofdogs" David and Emily will soon be adopting siblings Lizet, Angela, and Xavier. They have overcome the hurdle of getting visas to bring the kids to the USA. It won't be long. It will be a big adjustment and a new chapter in the lives of all involved but should be VERY positive.

The kids are excited about this move and are working with Tia Kym on their English and Tia Gloria has been teaching them music vocabulary in English so they can continue their piano studies.

After their return from the USA on June 9, Gloria started a four-week language refresher on June 14. She has time open in the afternoon for a few lessons and goes out to San Jose to work with the younger kids.

Tia Kym McDaniel comes to Arequipa

On June 17, Kym McDaniel arrived from Dallas to spend 7 weeks here in Arequipa. She'll be studying 4 weeks of Spanish at our local language institute starting June 28. She has been sharing with the kids of the casas, helping with teaching English and just loving on the kids. As you can see she is wonderfully received even by the new kids. She is also "job shadowing" Maria Perez, the director, to learn what is involved in running a children's home.

who is there on at least a temporary placement.

In Arequipa, rainbows are quite uncommon.

But recently, we witnessed a very rare

double rainbow from Sagrada Familia.

When asked what promise God

attached to the rainbow, several of the teens

remembered the covenant of Genesis 9:11-13

that God would never send another flood

to destroy the earth.

Exciting news!

San Jose has welcomed four new younger kids.

Over the weekend, Daniel joined his sister Daniela

(and brother Miguel Angel at Sagrada Familia).

On March 9th, three siblings,

two girls and a younger brother moved to San Jose.

and Daniel (almost 7).

Katiuska, Arelis, and Lizbeth are

adjusting very well to their new home.

Xavier is in 6th grade of primary.

But the newcomer who is getting the most attention is BOLT, the new puppy!

which is a nice park for playing and for riding horses.

Padre Ron and Tia Vicki

Due to medical evaluations in Peru, Padre made an emergency trip to the US for further evaluation. When he left in Nov., it was assumed he would be returning by Christmas to be with the kids. However, it was not to be. Padre and Vicki remain in the US where they covet your prayers for Ron's pancreatic cancer treatments. Give thanks, too, for the wonderful Christian medical personal that have been treating him. Pray as well for Vicki who ministers tirelessly to keep him as well and comfortable as possible.

Needless, to say, the change is the weather has been a shock for them! Brrrr!

Our prayer is that God's Gracious Hand will be over the Casas as the batton of leadership changes and that His Will be done in all things.

End of Academic Year

At the end of December the Academic School Year ends in Peru and vacation time sets in. This always brings changes with it. Some of our kids may be finishing their time at San Lucas, or finishing their various vocational courses- chef, electrician, seamstress, etc. Vacation time is time to practice piano, learn embroidery, practice English, etc. Also, it is a time when the Peruvian courts often re-evaluate the home situation of various kids. We always pray that God will reunite families where possible. Still, when the courts decide to return a child to a family where the child was removed because of "extreme poverty", we worry about parental motives and what is REALLY best for the child. Please join us in praying for God's guiding hand to be over each one that we hold so dear in our hearts and will miss so much that He will keep them in the palm of His hand. Surrendering loved ones to His Will and His Plan is still tough to do!

For Ron and Vicki, the weather in Dallas has been a challenge! Now that they have returned there for cancer treatments for Ron, the cold seems fierce. What happened to our 70 degree weather??

Much to the Johnson's delight, their daughter Laura was able to visit them at Christmas. Of course this provided more fun for the San Jose kids! Thanks to Sandy for sending these photos. In addition to piano, Gloria is inviting them over to learn embroidery. It is a fun time for all. Needless to say, new teddy bears are a hit!

Thanks to Sandy Johnson's help, we have been able to SKYPE both Casa San Jose and Casa Sagrada Familia. That was a true blessing. Both Tio Bob and Tia Susan Kerr were able to be present for the event. Here are some pics of the kids that the Johnsons were able to take on the Peru end. As you see, everyone looks hale and hearty.

First, an apology for the long delay in postings from the Casas. Things continue to move forward whether I keep you up to date or not!

Unfortunately, Ron became ill in October as the St. Philip's team visited. They did a great job of digging the foundation for the second-story stairs for more classrooms at San Lucas School. Additionally, they were able to visit with each of the Casas one afternoon and spend some good time with the kids. What a great and flexible group they are! It was good to have them actually stay in town rather than just pass by on their way to Cabanaconde. Thanks, guys and gals. Sorry I wasn't up to getting picture together before leaving Peru. We thought it might be a gall bladder surgery and back to Peru before Christmas.

After several more weeks of tests to discover the source of pain, we were advised to return to the US for additional tests which we did on Nov.9. We thought it might be a gall bladder surgery and back to Peru before Christmas. Next, out of His Providence, God provided fantastic medical assitance through Christian doctors in the US.

Finally, after a hospital stay, it was determined Nov.29th that Ron has pancreatic cancer and will not be returning to Peru. Praise God for the wonderful medical attention he has received and all the wonder prayers and support!
